The Army is committed to providing combat-ready forces and leading the development of the landward defence capability, embodying unity and professionalism to serve a country effectively in any situation.

Army careers encompass a diverse range of roles and responsibilities, each crucial to maintaining operational readiness and national defence. Here's a general description of army careers and what they entail:

Army careers involve a variety of roles, from combat and support functions to technical and administrative duties, aimed at ensuring the effectiveness and readiness of military operations. Soldiers are trained in various skills and may specialize in areas such as infantry, intelligence, engineering, logistics, artillery, armour, air defence, and more. Each career path within the army requires specific training, discipline, and a commitment to service. Responsibilities typically include:

  • Infantry: Soldiers in the infantry are the backbone of ground combat operations, trained in weapon handling, tactics, and manoeuvres in diverse environments.
  • Intelligence: Personnel in intelligence gather and analyze information critical to military operations, assessing threats and supporting decision-making.
  • Engineering: Army engineers build infrastructure, clear obstacles, and provide technical support, essential for mobility and operational effectiveness.
  • Logistics: Logisticians manage supplies, transportation, and resources, ensuring troops have what they need when and where they need it.
  • Artillery: Artillery crews operate heavy weaponry to support ground forces, providing firepower and strategic support in combat.
  • Armour: Crews in armour operate tanks and armoured vehicles, engaging in armoured warfare and reconnaissance missions.
  • Air Defence: Air defence units protect against aerial threats, operating radar systems and anti-aircraft weaponry to safeguard troops and installations.

These roles require physical fitness, technical proficiency, teamwork, and adaptability to varying and often challenging conditions. Army careers offer opportunities for personal development, leadership training, and the chance to contribute directly to national security and defence.

The future of work:

In the future, army careers will involve advanced technology, including AI, robotics, and cyber defence, to support military operations. Soldiers will use modern weapons, drones, and virtual training to enhance their skills. Strong physical fitness, technical proficiency, and problem-solving abilities will remain essential. The army will increasingly focus on peacekeeping, humanitarian missions, and disaster response, requiring leadership and adaptability.

One of the advantages of joining the army is that selected members with the required academic qualifications are also sent to universities or the Military Academy.

There are two intakes into the SANDF, one in January and one in June. There are career centres set up around the country and the SANDF do undertake careers exhibitions.
