Mathematics 

Mathematics is as the study of numbers, equations, functions and geometric shapes and their relationships (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mathematics). Mathematics provides a set of skills which one uses to do calculations and devise proofs. Some of its major subdivisions are arithmetic, algebra, geometry and calculus.

Purpose

The purpose of studying Mathematics at school is to enhance logical and critical thinking and develop pathways in the brain for problem- solving and decision-making.

Curriculum includes the following:

  • Number Patterns, Sequences, Series
  • Finance, growth and decay
  • Algebra
  • Differential Calculus
  • Probability
  • Euclidean Geometry and Measurement
  • Analytical Geometry
  • Trigonometry

Should I take this subject?

Take this subject if you can cope with Mathematics and it does not cause you extreme stress! However, if you are battling with Mathematics in Grade 9 even though you are working hard, you will continue to battle to pass this subject. It is better to pass Maths Literacy than it is to fail Mathematics.

Related Careers

Any student wishing to pursue a career in the fields of science, engineering, medicine or business (accounting and actuarial science) should take Mathematics as a subject. In addition, careers such as law and commerce, where logic is paramount, could benefit if the student takes Mathematics. Each university course has its own entrance requirements which should be carefully studied before the choice is made.
